Materials:
- One straw
or pencil
- clear
glass
- water
State/Goal(s)/Objectives: 11.a.1a- Describe an observed
event
Safety Considerations:
Use trays to avoid spills.
Math Connection:
angles
Science Process Skills:
observing and communicating.
Procedure:
- Fill the
glass with water.
- Put the
straw/pencil in a glass of water, and see what would happen to it.
Explanation:
When you placed the straw in the water it look bent or even chopped in two at some angles. The bend or break takes place at the surface of the water. It
happens because light bends when it passes from one substance to another. The
bending of light is called Refraction. The substances that allow the light to
pass through is called transparent. So in this case water, air, and glass are
transparent.
